The Best Things in Life Are: All About Free Editing Software

You could get all sorts of editing software these days for just a couple hundred dollars. But what about those who can't afford a couple hundred dollars? Are they going to be stuck with MS Paint and Windows Media Player forever? It looks like it, but not quite if you know where to look. There are some free editing software you can download from the Internet. So okay. They aren't exactly the best in the business. But hey, it's free. What more can you ask for?

Free video editing software

iMovie – iMovie is a free video editing software product that comes with Apple computers. It's been out some years, and feedback has been good so far. The latest version is iMovie 09. If you have an older version installed in your computer, you'll need to upgrade to the latest version to use it.

Windows Movie Maker – Windows Movie Maker is the quintessential video editing software for all Windows users. It is available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista users. It's very easy to use, and is a recommended starting point for amateur editors before they begin to invest on other video editing software.

Free music editing software

Audacity – The most popular free music editing software at the moment. Audacity was created by Dominic Mazzoni, a Google employee, from when he was still a graduate student, and is now a cross-platform application available for Mac OSX, Windows, Linux and BSD. It won the ScourgeForge Community Choice award for Best Project of Multimedia in 2007.

Soundbooth – Soundbooth is a free music editing software from Adobe Systems. It is also the owner of Adobe Audition, which is a music editing software that requires a fee to download. The major difference between the two is that Audition has a tool-based interface while Soundbooth uses a task-based interface, making it the ideal choice for novice sound editors.

Free image editing software

OpenOffice Draw – OpenOffice Draw is part of the OpenOffice suite and counterpart of the Microsoft Publisher. It includes many of the same features as Publisher, the biggest difference being that Draw is free. OpenOffice Draw is a vector graphics editor.

Inkscape – Inkscape is an open source vector graphics editing software, originally designed for the Linux but eventually got converted into a cross-platform application for the Mac OSX, Unix operating systems, and Microsoft Windows. One of the best things about this image editing software is that updates are being added to it regularly both by the Inkscape Team and its users.

This list good enough for your budget?
